📝 Inspection notes

Week 19 and a different kind of inspection today. Rather than opening every frame and disturbing the hive, we decided to do a minimal disturbance check to let the bees focus on what they are doing best right now, filling the Flow super with honey! The hive looks super healthy from all angles.

One smart technique used today, running a camera underneath from the front entrance to look for swarm cells without opening the hive. This is a great low-disruption way to check for signs of overcrowding or swarming. The verdict was clear, no swarm cells whatsoever! Still lots of bees but no signs of overcrowding or preparation to swarm. The colony is content and productive.

✅ Added DFM probiotic supplement today to support colony health heading into fall. Also made an important equipment upgrade, replaced the plastic queen excluder with a proper metal queen excluder. The plastic version was not working well and the metal one will do a much better job keeping the queen in the brood box where she belongs!
🍯 Flow super still almost full and the bees are clearly very busy with nectar collection! We discovered the local nectar source, bees from the BeeHiveCastle have been spotted foraging on Little John Bottlebrush flowers growing near the house. This beautiful compact shrub with its striking red bottlebrush flowers is clearly a favorite summer nectar source for our girls. That bottlebrush honey is going to taste incredible! 🌺🐝

Also captured some wonderful footage of an orientation flight happening at the hive entrance! Orientation flights are when young bees fly out in front of the hive for the first time to memorize its location before starting their foraging duties. Seeing lots of orientation flights is a sign of a healthy colony with young bees constantly being born. The BeeHiveCastle is thriving!

📋 Harvest is coming very soon! Will check the Flow super fill level on the next inspection and if the frames are ready we will do the first ever BeeHiveCastle honey harvest. After harvest, supplemental feeding will begin to make sure the colony builds up enough winter stores. Exciting times ahead!
