Week 13 at the BeeHiveCastle! All 8 bottom brood box frames inspected and the colony continues to look incredibly healthy. Lots of capped brood, fresh eggs and healthy larvae on every frame, the queen is clearly active and laying beautifully even though we didn't spot her today. Fresh eggs confirm she was laying within the last 72 hours so no concern at all.
Interesting finding this week, the frame we moved to the center last week still has uncapped honey on it. The bees have not moved those stores up to the Flow super yet. This is a patience game, they will relocate the honey when they are ready and when the Flow super frames are fully prepped and sealed. The colony knows what it's doing!
🍯 Flow super update — the bees are still working on sealing the cell gaps with wax. No nectar stored in the Flow frames yet but the prep work is continuing. This is normal for a first-year colony being introduced to Flow frames for the first time. They need to fully coat and seal every cell before they feel comfortable storing nectar there. Patience is the name of the game — honey is coming!
⚠️ Practice queen cups present again but completely empty as always. No swarm pressure — just a healthy thriving colony. Left them in place.
🐝 Sting update! Got stung on the finger through the latex gloves, totally unprovoked, just one of those random things that happens sometimes in beekeeping! The good news is it didn't hurt nearly as much as the first sting back in June. The body builds up some tolerance over time and experience helps you stay calm. All part of the first-year beekeeping journey! Bees were otherwise calm throughout the inspection.
✅ Colony is healthy and strong at Day 77! Eight frames of brood, eggs and larvae confirm a laying queen. The Flow super prep is ongoing and honey storage should begin soon. Everything is on track for a late summer harvest!
📋 Next inspection July 20th — checking Flow super progress again and monitoring the center frame honey stores. Hoping to see the first signs of nectar in the Flow cells!
