Week 17 and the BeeHiveCastle is delivering some amazing news! Missed the August 14th inspection but got in today on the 17th, and what a great one it was. The bees were completely calm throughout, the colony looks super healthy, and there is a very exciting update from the Flow super!
Found the queen right on Frame 2 today, nice and early in the inspection. She looks healthy and is clearly laying well, with lots of capped brood visible throughout all 8 bottom box frames. A strong healthy queen heading into fall is exactly what we want to see.
🍯 THE BIG UPDATE — there is now lots of honey in the Flow super! Since the last inspection the bees have really ramped up their nectar storage and the Flow frames are filling up beautifully. This changes everything, a first-year honey harvest is back on the table! Originally thought we would have to wait until next year, but the colony has proved us wrong in the best possible way. Harvest is expected before winter! 🎉🐝
✅ Fantastic inspection at Day 112! Queen found on Frame 2, loads of capped brood on all 8 frames, bees completely calm, and the Flow super is filling with honey. The plan is now to harvest before winter, then supplement feed if needed to make sure the colony has enough stores to get through. First-year honey harvest is happening!
⚠️ Practice queen cups present as always, completely empty. No swarm pressure. Will add DFM probiotic supplement next inspection to support colony health heading into fall.
📋 Next steps, adding DFM probiotic next inspection, monitoring Flow super fill level, planning harvest timing before winter, supplemental feeding after harvest if needed to top up winter stores. Exciting times at the BeeHiveCastle!
